The San Elizario Genealogy and Historical Society was founded in 1991 after a conversation at a family reunion about the importance of younger generations knowing about their family history and the history of San Elizario. The organization was incorporated as a Texas corporation in 1997 by Transito Alarcón Macías, Olga Trujillo Hernandez, Erasmo Payan, J.A. Perez, Mary Perez, Ida Castellano and Romelia Gonzalez and became a non-profit corporation on December 31, 1997.

Among its various programming in genealogy and its historical, cultural events, the organization proudly works alongside the County of El Paso to preserve and operate the Visitor Center at Los Portales Museum and the Old County Jail, two of the most valuable architectural assets on the El Paso Mission Trail. San Elizario was voted Readers Choice Best Historic Small Town Winners (2023) | USA TODAY 10Best
